During a 30 year career at Northamptonshire Police, Bob Thorogood worked his way through the ranks from Police Constable, until he finally occupied the chair of the town’s Police Commander.
Born at the end of the Second World War in the backstreets of Northampton, Bob was brought up by elderly, unmarried neighbours in the house next to his mother. It was a hard, lonely childhood, but these humble beginnings left him worldly wise and unafraid of hard work, and undoubtedly helped to shape the rest of his life.
Behind the Call of Duty – A Policeman’s Story describes Bob’s days as a young officer in the turbulent 1970’s, when the service was struggling against an undeserved notoriety for ‘fixing’ evidence and ‘Sweeney-style’ justice, his involvement in a number of high profile investigations and his final role as a Chief Superintendent.
